Illustration on fictional data. The analysis and the exercise were prepared in text form with an AI assistant. This is not a client story, a psychological assessment or a measurement of the effectiveness of Executive Hiring.
Task and profile
- Candidate K has six years of implementation coordination. In one migration project he coordinated a cross-functional team of six people and reported costs and risks. He had neither full responsibility for the financial result (P&L) nor the right to approve the budget. The material contains no numerical project result or language certificate.
- Goal: leading implementations for B2B clients. Constraint: at most two overnight business stays per month.
Two offers to assess
- A
- Implementation Lead: coordination of implementations, client workshops in English and cost reporting. The way the team is managed and the travel require clarification.
- B
- Business Unit Director: full P&L and eight overnight stays per month.
Before you read the result
You have time to prepare thoroughly for one process. Do you choose A, B, or do you ask questions first? Point out one requirement confirmed by experience, one unknown and one contradiction with your terms.
Method and criteria
- Goal and evidence → comparison of roles → questions → update after the reply → materials and exercise → preparation of terms and development.
- We check that claims are consistent with experience, the significance of constraints and the basis for the next decision. We do not calculate a fictional fit percentage.
Result of the choice and new information
- A is the direction to be checked. B, under the current assumptions, has no priority: it exceeds the overnight-stay limit, and P&L is not confirmed in the profile.
- Recruiter A explains: cross-functional coordination without formal direct reports, cost reporting instead of P&L and a plan of one overnight stay per month. This justifies a further conversation, not accepting an offer that has not yet been made. Experience of running client workshops in English remains to be checked — merely using the language at work does not confirm it.
Why does A remain the direction to be checked?
The recruiter's reply clarifies the responsibility and the current travel plan, but neither guarantees the final terms nor confirms workshop skills. The next step is to clarify this gap and prepare evidence of one's own contribution. The name of role B alone does not remove the travel conflict and does not replace P&L experience.
Sample of the application material
„I coordinated a cross-functional team of six people on a migration project. I reported costs and risks, supporting the decisions of those approving the budget.”
Readability of the document in applicant tracking systems (ATS) does not justify adding formal direct reports, budget authority, P&L or an undocumented result.
Coach — answer, feedback, next attempt
Question: “What was your contribution to leading the project and to cost decisions?”
First answer for assessment: “I managed budgets and led large transformations. I can deliver any project.”
Feedback: a general statement does not explain one's own contribution, and part of the claims goes beyond the profile data. Describe the activities and the limits of your authority; add the result only after pointing to evidence.
Next attempt: “On the migration project I coordinated the work of a cross-functional team of six people. I reported costs and risks. I did not approve the budget; I provided information to the people making those decisions. Before the interview I will add a documented project result to the material.”
The second answer is more specific and consistent with the stated role. Evidence of the migration result is still missing. This is an assessment of this statement against the criteria, not a confirmation of the level of competence or of effectiveness in recruitment.
Negotiation preparation
For the conversation: responsibility and authority, success criteria for the role, travel and how the limit will be confirmed, resources, and remuneration and other terms. No rates were given; we neither add them nor accept proposals on the candidate's behalf.
What would change the direction?
If A required four overnight stays, the conflict with K's constraint would return. A requirement of full P&L would require a reassessment of the fit. These are separate variants, not further facts of this story.
Development after the process
Add evidence of results and practise explaining one's own contribution. Keep the questions and the feedback for subsequent interviews. If a future goal includes P&L or formal people management, separately identify a path to gaining that experience.
